Ethiopian Review
As expected, Microsoft finally revealed that it will cut
the price of the Xbox 360 Elite from $400 to $300.
And as expected, the mid-range Xbox 360 Pro
http://xrl.us/360Pro will be discontinued, but it will be
sold for just $250 while supplies last. If you have any
desire to buy Microsoft’s game console, you should jump on
that deal right now. Don’t even think about buying the
Elite instead. Here’s why:

IMO, MS dropped the ball by discontinuing the Pro as it stands now. They
sold well and really are the better value for those who need the medium
between that horrible 20gig drive and too much of what is 120g for their
needs. They dropped the price of the Elite by $100, but they also removed
some of the inclusion that came with the previous $399 price point
(HDMI/Component cables). That removal has been one of my complaints about
the PS3 not including headsets, HD cables, etc. MS is simply following that
lead somewhat and think they can nickel and dime gamers having to buy these
accessories to make their console function properly in HD..
I can see the PS3 now selling more than the 360 on average during this
Holiday season, unless MS has another price drop. They should have dropped
the Arcade by $20 to compete with the Slim, or drop the Arcade altogether,
sell them off @ $179 and then offer the Pros at a new $229 price point. The
Slim is going to be the better deal than the Elite as it also has Wi-Fi, and
to add Wi-Fi to a 360 cost $100, go figure.

I thought a 120g would be to big to but I only have 60g left on my
120g hdd
You can get a HDMI cable for $3 online , YOU DON'T NEED THE OFFICIAL
MS HDMI , all that is in the box is a regular HDMI cable . Why pay
$40 for a component when you can just buy a regular HDMI cable for the
ELITE for just $3.
The Pro's are mostly the old NON-JASPER motherboards, while the new
ELITE's are being reported as being the new and improved JASPER
motherboard which by all account had reduced the RROD risk to near
zero.
I say get the ELITE and find a regular HDMI cable for cheap, I got
mine for $3 online shipped ,total cost. THE ELITE DOES COME WITH A
CONTROLLER TOO.
Plus when you consider just one game saved to HDD for better texture
loading and smoother load times takes up 6g of HDD space, that's just
one game.
Having the extra HDD is nice , not needed but nice.
DELL has a special code , although I'll have to dig it up you can get
an ELITE for $250+
HDMI $3
now you do the math

5 reason why you SHOULD by an ELITE instead
Reason #1 The (new) ELITE has the new more reliable less power
consuming JASPER motherboard, the PRO has the older RROD prone chipset
(the new ELITEs are showing up with 12,1a , the JASPER model)
Reason #2 You can buy an HDMI cable for $3 online, HD cable problem
solved (any HDMI cable works with the ELITE)
search google or hit amazon I got my 6ft HDMI cable there from a
vendor for $3 shipped
Reason #3 The ELITE has a larger HDD, I've already filled mine to
65g , and I don't even watch movies, now if I had a PRO I'd have to
upgrade or delete some games saved to HDD to make room
Reason #4 Black is beautiful and matches 90% of electronic equipment
with black being the predominant color of choice for electronic
equipment.
Reason #5 DELL has a 15% off code that will enable you to get an ELITE
for around $250 and change , now you have enough left over for another
controller
Enter this coupon code at DELL for 15% off although ELITES are
currently sold out, the code is good until OCT -31

True...and false.
While you can get cheap cables online, the problem is that the 360 does
not have a discrete optical audio port like the PS3 has. This means if your
receiver can't split a HDMI signal into its separate audio and video parts -
like mine - you'll need to plug in a separate optical audio cable for
surround sound. If you have an older Pro/Premium or Elite unit, you can
simply use the included HD-AV component video cable. The port is located
on the AV connector side. However if you have one of the newer Elite
units, or an Arcade (like I do) you have a choice: Either buy the HD-AV
Component Cable kit for $40, or buy Microsoft's HDMI cable kit for the 360
which includes a HDMI cable, and a special AV connector that only has
audio breakouts on it. So yes, I essentially ended up spending $40 just
to get that stupid AV dongle. I can only hope that Microsoft gets its
head out of its rear and makes the optical audio port separate, like they
did for the HDMI port.
At least I didn't have to buy any special cables for my PS3, but prior to
the 3.0 firmware, it was unable to output an audio signal on both the HDMI
and optical audio ports simultaneously - something my satellite box, 360,
and upscaling DVD player can do. (I haven't applied the update yet -
heard too many bad things about bricked PS3s...I'll wait for the
inevitable 3.0.1.)

You can get the MS HDMI cable kit for $20 online at EBAY
You can get new controllers at Amazon for $38 shipped
I'd rather get a Jasper and your more likely to get one with the new
Elite and you save 15% at DELL so an ELITE is already the same price
as a PRO
Now this is turning into PS3 vs. 360 thread, I have both so I don't
care about this issue
But since you brought it up , no amount of included cables and optical
ports will let me play L4D,Gears,Shadow Complex, or ODST on my PS3

So at that price point, why not save me a trip out to buy one and

Most people don't have receivers, and those that do most likely are in
the same boat as you and I. I don't even bother with HDMI for my Xbox
360 except when I'm traveling to friends' or relatives', in which case
it's easier for me to just deal with television sound.
I just use the Xbox 360 component cable and plug an optical audio
cable into it.

Wait... why would you want to output audio to both the HDMI *and* the
optical ports? What would be the point?

This one is really the only truly compelling statement of support for
choosing an Elite over a Pro model. The Jasper motherboard seems to be
a Godsend. I probably wouldn't pay $50 just for peace of mind, but
bundled with everything else you talk about, I'd more seriously
consider it.
Then again, a lot of people would rather just save the $50, especially
in this economy.

True but the perception that Microsoft "took something away" is still
there. It may not matter to some people but I'm sure there will be a
lot of consumers a bit peeved about it especially if they're not more
electronically inclined and know about looking for generic HDMI cables
on Amazon for $3.

Most people don't play a lot of games at the same time, and many
probably wouldn't even think much about the "install to hard drive"
option. Hell, many wouldn't even see it since all you have to do to
play a game is activate the first panel in that row, which is Play
Game from Disc or something like that.
This is not to dismiss the validity of your information. You do get a
LOT more hard drive space for just another $50 but like I said above,
for a lot of people, especially right now, saving that $50 will be
more important.
> Reason #4 Black is beautiful and matches 90% of electronic equipment

Few people view the Xbox 360 as a home entertainment component. No
matter how hard Microsoft and Sony try, most people still just see
these devices as video game consoles.
And does anyone *really* want to shove either one of them into a
crowded, enclosed cabinet?

This isn't widespread knowledge, although I suppose it's useful for
people here in these groups looking to buy one versus the other.
The only thing is... isn't this a code that applies to a LOT of
products, including the Pro system? In that case, it wouldn't be so
much an argument for an Elite vs. Pro but an argument for buying
whichever system you prefer at Dell.

Wait... why would you want to output audio to both the HDMI *and* the
optical ports? What would be the point?
Can you clear up a question for a potential buyer? From looking at the
manual online I see there is a separate output for optical on the console.
Question: If I want to run HDMI to my plasma and the optical to my AV I
should be able to get sound both ways correct? There are times when TV
sound thru HDMI is more then good enough and other times where I would like
the enhanced sound of 5.1 from my AV for games.
TIA.

I got my Arcade unit about 2 years ago, so my prices are based on back then.
Although admitantly I didn't think to try Amazon back then either. I was
more interested in just getting the console connected to my HDTV "now".
Eh, so I paid a $20 "now" tax.
Still think it's stupid there isn't an optical audio port on the 360, as
opposed to the AV dongle like they did with the original Xbox.

Flexibility.
My wife comes home for lunch and watches part of a DVD/blu-ray. She
doesn't like to mess with the receiver ("too many buttons") so having the
sound come out of the TV is just fine for her. (I've yet to find
something that has made her a fan of booming bass and surround sound.)
Even if I'm using the system, sometimes I can't use the surround sound
speakers because she's sleeping. (She likes to sleep in late on the weekend,
whereas I've discovered I can get in a few hours of gaming if I stick to
my normal weekday schedule.)
In the past for other devices I had the red/white audio cables connected to
the TV, and the optical cable connected to the receiver for the same reason.
I guess I could fix some of these problems with a decent programmable
remote. I actually have a low end Harmony model but I've been somewhat
lazy about getting it setup :-)

See my previous post in this thread. Basically it gives me more
flexibility, and allows me to choose to use the TV or the surround system.

All my other devices - satellite box, upscaling DVD player, and Xbox 360 -
can do this, so I was a bit puzzled why the PS3 was not. The latest
firmware upgrade for the PS3 (3.0.1) supposedly allows this, so I'll have
to try it out. (the function went into 3.0.0 but there were reports of
3.0.0 causing problems so I held off until 3.0.1 was released to fix the
problems 3.0.0 caused.)

Obviously Sony/Microsoft hope they can make some extra money by selling
you their own brand of HDMI cable. Acessories are like 50% profit, or
something ridiculous like that, aren't they? I mean, look at how much
Sony still charges for PS2 memory cards.

Personally, I run all my audio to the TV and to my 5.1 system. I run
everything to the TV for use at night, or when I otherwise don't want a
subwoofer and other loud audio (and also because the headphone jack is
on the TV, although in practice I use this rarely.
I run everything to the receiver both to get the best possible sound
(since my TV only passes L+R analog signals through to the receiver),
and to allow audio to continue when the TV is turned off for applicable
equipment (mostly music, this would apply less to the XBox360)

I haven't seen PRO's at DELL in awhile , all I see is arcades and the
new ELITES, that's why I didn't mention it.

Look if you wanna buy a PRO with the older chipset and actually costs
the same as a jasper ELITE with a coupon , go for it. I just posted
there are better alternatives at the same prices.

The latest firmware on the PS3 has this (I just bought one). You can
have both HDMI and optical audio active, but the secondary audio output
is downscaled to PCM stereo.

You'll get sound through both. When I was bringing my console back and
forth between my place and my nephew's place (no receiver), I never
had to change any setting in the dashboard.
At home, though, I couldn't imagine why you *wouldn't* want to pipe
the sound through your audio equipment if it's already there. I could
understand if you had to do all sorts of stuff to set it up each time
but isn't it just switching on your receiver and turning to the
appropriate input?

FredP said something similar. What I'm not getting is why you would
want to use the TV speakers when you have a surround system?

Is the television in your bedroom? When I'm playing really late at
night or really early in the morning - the former much more likely
than the latter :-) - I just dial down the volume. Then again, I live
in a decent-sized house with the master bedroom upstairs and the
gaming consoles in the living room downstairs...

I have one as well. Haven't done jack with it. I should probably do
something, though, to justify the money I spent on it.
